Service Chevrons US Cavalry

In 1879 the secretary of war adopted another Chevron that replaced the 1865/78,   3/4 inch chevron.  A Campaign Chevrons being 1/2 inch wide this was to recognise service in the Indian War Campaigns.

These were made in different branch colours with red boarders.

Soldiers who had served in more than one branch wore their enlistment chevrons one above the other 1/2 inch apart on the lower sleeves.
